Blackpool pensioner Bert Williams (68) has kept up an unbroken whinge about the Olympic Games since the day London was awarded the event in 2005.

‘I’ve written at least one letter a day to Lord Coe about this diabolical event,’ he said, ‘even though the cost of a second class stamp is bloody extortionate.

‘Just think of all the schools and hospitals you could build with all that Olympic money as well as getting more kids involved in competitive tiddlywinks.’

Bert admits that his whingeing stalled after the opening ceremony, but the next morning he’d penned a ten page complaint to Lord Coe about the ‘scandalous cost of the sparkler display’. Now he’s confident he’ll have a spectacular whinge ready for Sunday’s closing ceremony.

Bert’s wife Mavis – who likes a good whinge herself when she can get one in edgeways – says she’s worried that her husband might be at a loss after the Olympics.

‘But I expect he’ll have something to say about the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. I mean, think of all the schools and hospitals you could build with all that money and … ‘ she said.
